Public Musicology

Showing the public face of musicology is one of the most rewarding parts of my vocation. I have addressed audiences in both intimate and concert hall-sized groups (see lists below) and am available for short- and long-term engagements. I also write program notes and essays that help to unify and make concerts meaningful through hidden thematic programming and original insights into the composers, their times, and their music.

I will never forget the time a woman approached me after I gave a pre-concert talk at the Pittsburgh Symphony. She had attended monthly pre-concert talks since the Reiner years (the 1940s) and told me that mine was the best of them because, she said, I was an educator and knew how to engage the audience in the stories and sounds of the music. My experience speaking about music to my students in the classroom had successfully translated to the concert hall.
